Kat, Incorrigible

Kat, Incorrigible - Stephanie Burgis First in a series about Kat, a 12-year-old youngest sister who finds out she's inherited more of her magical mother than she knew. And 'Incorrigible" is exactly the right word for Kat, who is the type of curious, clumsy and often overlooked kind of kid I can really understand. The best part of the book is the interactions between the characters, particular Kat and her two older sisters, who treat her with the kind of frustrated, overwhelming, protectively fierce kind of love older sisters can feel for their younger sisters. Also great, as an older reader, is that I can recognize the basic ingredients of the story - the mean Stepmother, the secluded gothic house party & sister who is supposed to sacrifice herself for the good of the family, the suitors who don't suit, the magical misunderstandings - but they're put together in a way that I didn't see everything coming before it happened, and I was entertained at every step along the way. Definitely going to read the next in the series, put this on the keeper shelf for Lil Girl when she gets a bit older. (Although, it's a pretty good length for read-alouds.)
