Evaluating short chapter books, those for early independent readers is tricky - the text can't be too complex, but if it's too simple it feels babyish and the kids don't want to read it. I felt like this one fell on the 'too easy, too young' side of the spectrum, which isn't a strike against it, necessarily, but it wasn't what I expected. I guess I was looking for a little bit more - more characterization, specifically. The plot and mystery were very appropriate for younger readers, and I just felt like the two main characters could have used a little bit more depth. But for kids who are just getting past those beginning stages, this could be a good first chapter book.
