The Book Whisperer: Awakening the Inner Reader in Every Child - Donalyn Miller Reading this book reminded me of a couple of things:1) I really miss teaching, and need to get back to it2) If a teacher knows what she's doing, kids can achieve pretty much anything3) Nobody understands teaching reading like an avid reader. (I don't think you can do it any other way)And Miller is, for sure, a reader. Anybody who requires her class to read 40 books over the course of the school year, builds an extensive lending library in her classroom (and shows them how to use it), or says things like "Readers whispering back and forth about their reading experiences - this is how reading should look" is obviously somebody who understands the power and pull of books. (And Goodreads, I should think!) There were so many good parts in this book, and I was reading with a limited amount of post it flags, so I kept having to go back and tear them in half, or thirds or fourths, so I could mark yet another place to go back to or yet another quote I wanted to catch. There was a whole lot of practical stuff (lists and templates and whatnot) that I was sad not to be able to put into effect (see #1), but make this an even better resource to have on hand. Loved it, and have already translated the recommended reads into my BookMooch wishlist (thank heavens for unlimited wishlists). :)
